Ruben Diaz, MD
Dr. Diaz is an established and highly skilled physician with over 25 years of experience in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Interventional Pain Management. He was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico where he attended medical school. Dr. Diaz has taught for 3 different Medical schools including 7 years for the Emory University PM&R Department where he was awarded Teacher of the Year in 2004. He lives in Lawrenceville, GA with his wife of 28 years and two sons. During his 20 years living in Lawrenceville he has been deeply involved in the community from helping coach little league to supporting all public schools in various ways.
During his free time he enjoys spending time with his family. He also enjoys different activities including Track and Field, Tae Kwon Do and Scuba Diving. He is also a certified judge for BBQ competitions.
John R. Dorris, III, MD
Dr. Dorris is a board certified orthopedic surgeon who received his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. Dr. Dorris completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Emory University. After his residency, he went to Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado to complete his fellowship. Dr. Dorris treats shoulders, knees and hips in patients in the Athens and Royston clinic locations.
Logan K. Fields, MD
Dr. Logan Fields is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. A native of Albany in southwest Georgia he spent the vast majority of his childhood participating in sports and adventuring in the great outdoors. His love for sports continues on with coaching his children and providing orthopedic care to the community's athletes of all ages.
Mason N. Florence, MD
Dr. Mason Florence is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle. Originally from the small town of LaFayette, Georgia, he attended the University of Georgia where his childhood love for the Dawgs continued.
Dr. Florence went on to pursue his M.D. at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia and received his orthopedic training at the Medical College of Georgia, as well. With a special interest in foot and ankle, he pursued fellowship training in Orthopedic Foot and Ankle surgery at the University of Alabama Birmingham under the direction of Dr. John S. Gould and Associates.
Dr. Florence and his wife, Rachel, have two children, Samuel and Caroline. He enjoys golf, skiing, and other outdoor activities with his family.
David C. Harkins, DO, FAOAO
David C. Harkins, DO, FAOAO, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. He is fellowship-trained in shoulder and elbow surgery, and he specializes in shoulder, upper extremity, and reconstructive surgery as well as fracture and degenerative care.
Dr. Harkins completed his orthopedic residency at St. Luke’s Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri in 2004. Des Peres Hospital has been recognized as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Bariatrics, Orthopedics and Patient Safety by the national Women’s Choice Award program. In 2005, Dr. Harkins completed his fellowship at the W.B. Carrell Memorial Clinic/ Baylor University Hospital.
He currently serves on the Continuing Medical Education Planning Committee for the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics (AOAO) and served as President/AOAO Shoulder and Elbow Section during 2017-2018.
Jian Hu, MD, PHD
Dr. Hu is a board-certified Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine specialist. His expertise lies in restoring function and optimizing performance in those patients with spine, joint, muscle and nerve pain through interventional medicine. He believes that a series of small steps can yield big results.
During his training and career, Dr. Hu has been honored with numerous awards for teaching, research and clinical care. He has been named Fellow of American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. He has also been recognized as Faculty Attending of the Year, which is awarded to the department’s outstanding physician and teacher in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
Joseph T. Johnson, MD
Dr. Johnson was first drawn to specialize in foot and ankle surgery when he was a surgical technician specializing in orthopedics and also as an orthopedic resident. There were few orthopedist specializing in this area and he wanted to fill this void to give patients the option of a specialist in their foot and ankle care.
To accomplish this he was trained by 2 of the founders of orthopedic foot and ankle surgery, Doctors Lamar Fleming and John Gould. During fellowship he gained insights into the significant complexities found in foot and ankle function and pathologies. He then joined Athens Orthopedic Clinic as the first fully fellowship trained foot and ankle orthopedist in the Athens area.
Through the years he has maintained a busy clinical practice, staying on the cutting edge of his specialty. He performed the first ankle replacements in the Athens area. He was the first in the region to perform arthroscopic treatment of Haglund’s Syndrome of the heel. He is a reliable referral source for Orthopedic Surgeons and Foot and Ankle Surgeons in the Southeast.

Stephen B. Johnson, DO
Dr. Johnson is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, elbow and knee as well as in Sports Medicine. He completed his orthopedic training at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta with special interests in Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Traumatology. He went on to pursue these interests with fellowship training in Sports Medicine at the Andrews Institute under the direction of Dr. James Andrews. During this time he was a team physician with the Auburn Tigers, Washington Redskins and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Dr. Johnson has a subspecialty certificate in Sports Medicine. Dr. Johnson’s professional affiliations include memberships in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, and Georgia Orthopedic Society.
Dr. Johnson is currently a team physician for the University of Georgia and several local high schools.

David I. Katz, MD
Dr. David Katz is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon with a certificate of added qualification in hand surgery who specializes in the treatment of the hand, wrist and upper extremity. As a native of Richmond, Virginia, he attended the University of Virginia where he was an Echols Scholar.
After graduation, he lived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming for a year as a ski instructor. He went on to attend medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas where he was awarded both the Southwestern Medical Foundation Scholarship as well as the Melba Williams Scholarship for academic achievement. Dr. Katz then moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he lived for 5 years as he completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Emory University. During his last year of residency, he was honored to be chosen by his peers to serve as one of two Chief Residents.
Mitchel Leavitt, MD
After high school, Dr. Leavitt enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and achieved the rank of Sergeant while serving in the special operations community. As a Force Reconnaissance Marine, he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and to Liberia during the Second Liberian Civil War. He participated in humanitarian aid missions in East Timor, and would ultimately get out of the USMC to attend college at Armstrong University in Savannah, Ga.
Dr. Leavitt ultimately earned his medical degree from Mercer University, after which he went on to complete his residency at Emory University’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine in Atlanta, GA. After residency, he went to Stanford University in Palo Alto, California for his fellowship in Anesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine.
He treats most pain syndromes, but he does not treat total body pain, fibromyalgia, facial pain, pelvic or abdominal pain, or headaches.

Julian P. Price, MD

Dr. Price is a native of Swainsboro, Georgia, and graduated from the University of Georgia majoring in exercise and sports science. After completion of his certification for athletic training, he attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia where he received the Merck Award for academic excellence. Dr. Price completed his orthopaedic residency training in Chattanooga, Tennessee. After completing his residency, he went on to Minneapolis, Minnesota to complete an orthopaedic spine and reconstructive fellowship at Twin Cities Spine Center.
Dr. Price joined Athens Orthopedic Clinic in 2011 and sees patients in Athens and Loganville. He has privileges at St. Mary’s Hospital, Piedmont Athens Regional, Piedmont Walton, and Eastside Medical Center. He performs procedures at both the Athens and Loganville AOC Surgery Centers.
Dr. Price is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the North American Spine Society. He has presented research in the field of spine surgery at both the national and international level. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at the GRU/UGA medical partnership campus. He is currently the Chief of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Joseph M. Savitz, DO
Dr. Savitz grew up in Tampa, Florida. After completing college and medical school, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy as a Naval Flight Surgeon. He was the Senior Flight Surgeon at Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, California where he then went on to become the Senior Flight Surgeon/Medical Officer for Marine Air Group 70 in the Persian Gulf War and stationed aboard the USS New Orleans Amphibious Assault Carrier.
He currently serves at the Medical Director of Athens Orthopedic Clinic Occupational Health/Workers’ Compensation division.
Michael S. Shuler, MD
Dr. Shuler was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for undergraduate education. He then attended Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for medical school. He trained in orthopedic surgery at Emory University and then spent an additional year in Seattle at the University of Washington. This additional year of training was spent in hand and upper extremity surgery including microsurgical techniques.
Dr. Shuler arrived in Athens in 2008. He has been active in medical research and device development. He currently is in charge of a Department of Defense grant working toward developing a non-invasive monitoring system for compartment syndrome. Dr. Shuler is board certified in both Orthopedics as well as additional qualifications in surgery of the hand.

Michael Shane Smith, MD, is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and fellowship-trained in all aspects of sports medicine. He is a Louisiana native who received his undergraduate in Biomedical Engineering at Louisiana Tech University as a student-athlete. Dr. Smith attended medical school at Louisiana State University Health Center, Louisiana’s flagship and most comprehensive academic health sciences center. After graduating, Dr. Smith completed his residency in orthopedics at Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, where he received comprehensive training in general orthopedics. He specialized in sports medicine, arthroscopy and orthopedic trauma training at Lake Tahoe Orthopedic Institute in Nevada before returning back to Georgia.
