About Dr. Ormonde Mahoney

Dr. Ormonde Mahoney is a 1983 graduate of the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He completed an Orthopedic Surgery Residency at The Medical College of Georgia in 1988 before completing a Fellowship in Joint Replacement at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Mahoney has called Athens “home” since 1989 when he returned to Georgia to join Athens Orthopedic Clinic, where he has practiced without interruption for the past 32 years. He has achieved international recognition in the field of adult reconstruction, publishing over 50 articles in peer reviewed medical journals. He was the first knee surgeon from the state to be inducted into the prestigious Knee Society, a group of recognized scientists and experts in the field of knee reconstruction. Dr. Mahoney has served on the faculty of the Harvard Hip and Knee Reconstruction Course for Orthopedic Surgeons He has presented hundreds of lectures in the US and Internationally on topics surrounding hip and knee replacement and has served as the chairman of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery annual course on Knee Replacement. In 2011, he won the prestigious Insall Award for research in total knee arthroplasty and in 2019 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Mahoney has reconstructed the knees and hips of over 20,000 patients and remains active both in surgery and innovation as a designer of Orthopedic Implants and robotic techniques used for patients throughout the world.
